Rifle Ammunition: Bullets

Bullets come in a variety of sizes and styles. The weight of a bullet is measured in grains. A typical .22 caliber solid bullet is 40 grains. A common bullet weight in .30-06 is 180 grains. Some bullets are jacketed with copper so they will retain their mass upon impact.

boattail bullet

Boat-tail bullets with a ballistic tip have a flatter trajectory over longer distances.

Soft point bullet

Soft point bullets expand and increase their diameter upon impact.

Rifle Calibers for Game

Recommended Calibers for Game

In Texas, white-tailed deer, mule deer, desert bighorn sheep, and pronghorn may NOT be hunted with rimfire ammunition of any caliber. Rimfire ammunition does not possess enough velocity at longer ranges for clean shots on big game.

Bullet Range

Typically most of the shots you will take on game will be between 50 and 200 yards but the range of modern firearms is much farther. Knowing the range of your firearm is critical to being aware at what distances your firearm could cause injury.
