Top Texas Conservation Stories of 2004

EDITORS NOTE: In this issue of TPWD News, we forsake our usual format for the most part and provide a summary of the top conservation stories of the year. Details about these topics can be found in the online news archive. Please note that TPWD will take its customary two-week annual hiatus from distributing weekly news during the coming holidays. Unless important news develops that is worth sharing, we are not at this time planning to issue news on Dec. 27 and Jan. 3. Our current plan is to resume news distribution on Jan. 10. Wireless Internet Service Debuts in Five Texas State Parks

AUSTIN, Texas — TengoInternet and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are starting a pilot program to offer wireless Internet service at five Texas state parks — Choke Canyon State Park (Calliham) near Three Rivers, Blanco State Park near Blanco, Balmorhea State Park near Toyahvale, Goose Island State Park near Rockport, and Ray Roberts Lake State Park (Isle du Bois) near Pilot Point.

Lavaca Bay Settlement Provides Restoration, Clean Up

POINT COMFORT, Texas — A team of state and federal agencies today announced two settlement agreements with Alcoa Inc. and Alcoa World Alumina L.L.C. that address mercury-contaminated sediments in Lavaca Bay, ongoing non-permitted discharges of mercury into Lavaca Bay, and soil contamination at the Point Comfort/Lavaca Bay Superfund Site.

Whooping Crane Population Reaches Record High

ROCKPORT, Texas — This winter, the world’s last natural wild population of whooping cranes pushed past the 200 mark, a landmark event for an endangered bird species that has come back from the brink of extinction in the past six decades.

Rains Delay Trout Stocking in Guadalupe River

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is delaying the stocking of rainbow trout in the Canyon Tailrace along the Guadalupe River until at least mid-December, due to high water flow.
