Cedar Hill State Park to Host Adventure Race, 5k-15k Run

Unique Triathlon Format at DFW Area Park for Trail Run, Mountain Bike and Paddling Events

CEDAR HILL—Ordinarily, the miles of scenic hike and bike trails of the 1,500-acre Cedar Hill State Park are a welcome retreat for nature lovers seeking respite from surrounding urban sprawl. But this weekend, those same wooded paths along the shores of Joe Pool Reservoir in the southern DFW Metro area will play host to a series of running events, including a unique triathlon format of the Eco Lone Star Adventure Race series and the XTERRA Trail Run 5k and 15k.

Fitness and adventure enthusiasts can register as individuals or as a team for this USARA-sanctioned event up until race time, which is set for 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 9 for the adventure race, and 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 10 for the 5k and 15k.

Saturday’s Eco Lone Star Adventure Race has two options: a Sport Adventure race, which lasts 2-3 hours and covers 10-17 miles of mountain biking, 3-5 miles of trail running and 1-2 miles of paddling; or the Extreme Adventure race, a more challenging trek of 6-12 hours, with 20-30 miles of mountain biking, 8-12 miles of paddling, 10-15 miles of land and trail navigation, as well as additional mystery events and challenges.

Sunday’s XTERRA Trail Run 5k and 15k are both scheduled for the park’s bike trails, are subject to weather and trail conditions, and accumulate points for each the XTERRA Trail Run and Pure Austin Trail Running series.

“Cedar Hill State Park is a great location for adventure-type events,” said Jeff Achee, ranger at Cedar Hill State Park. “Being in a major metropolitan area makes it convenient to get to, and our trail system and water access are conducive to hosting events that have multiple formats. We’ve already got about 100 people each for Saturday and Sunday’s runs.”

Advanced registration is encouraged, as participants will need to be familiar with equipment requirements, such as drinking water, life jackets and a compass, and all fees.
