AUSTIN – On Oct. 12, 1934, Lake Brownwood State Park was deeded to the State Parks Board by the Brown County Water Improvement District No. 1 to be a state park for public enjoyment.

This Sunday, the park is celebrating 80 years as a Texas state park by hosting a day filled with festivities planned from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., for both kids and adults.

The Kid’s Fishing Derby kicks off the celebration at 6 a.m., and is awarding prizes for the largest and smallest fish caught. Fishing licenses are never required when fishing at a state park, and Lake Brownwood State Park will have poles and tackle available for kids through the Tackle Loaner program. Rangers will also be on site to help kids with their fishing skills.

The day continues with a nature hike at 10 a.m. Through the remainder of the day, the park will host a 5K trail run, a history of the park program, historic cabin tours, a presentation about the Civilian Conservation Corps in Texas and a star gazing party at 8 p.m. With the exception of the 5K trail run, all events are free with paid entrance to the park. Entrance fees are $4 daily for adults and free for children 12 and under.
